HU ACADEMIC MEDICAL CENTER
Project Overview
The new Howard University Academic Medical Center represents the next chapter in a historic legacy of healthcare, education, and service that has supported the people of Washington, D.C. for more than 160 years. Rooted in the legacy of Freedmen’s Hospital, established in 1862 to care for formerly enslaved individuals, African Americans, Civil War soldiers, and underserved populations, Howard University’s healthcare mission has long stood as a national symbol of compassionate care and academic excellence. Today, Howard University Hospital continues that tradition as one of the nation’s leading academic medical institutions dedicated to serving all communities across the District of Columbia and beyond.
The Next Chapter in a Historic Legacy
Historic Site of Griffith Stadium
The current hospital campus also sits on the historic site of Griffith Stadium, once home to the Washington Senators baseball team, Washington Redskins football team and part-time home of the Homestead Grays Negro League baseball team remains an important cultural landmark in the District. Griffith Stadium was more than a sports venue, it was a gathering place where history was made through athletics, entertainment, and community events that brought together generations of Washington residents. The transformation of this historic site into Howard University Hospital reflects a continued legacy of service, unity, resilience, and community impact. Just as Griffith Stadium once served as a landmark destination for the city, Howard University Hospital has become a cornerstone institution dedicated to healing, education, and advancing health equity.
